Description
Henry S. Richardson, Democratic Autonomy: Public Reasoning about the Ends of Policy (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2002), xii + 316 pp. Early work on deliberative democracy was generally satisfied with drawing a broad distinction among democratic theories, contrasting the deliberative approach with pluralist and social-choice-theoretic models and touting what the authors took to be the obvious attractions of the deliberative approach: its ability to explain how democratic politics can change people's minds, and forge a consensus that is somehow more than a mere lining up of similar preferences. Such work took its task to be to change our view of what democracy was and ought to be, and thus to re-orient theoretical discussions of democracy. In that, it was highly successful: deliberative democracy is arguably now the mainstream position in democratic theory.
